Arlington, home of the Nacho?

by Debbie

nachocheese_1.jpgWell, the ballpark nacho at least.  My friend, Jennifer, self-proclaimed Food Network Addict, enlightened me to this fact.  She had seen it on one of those shows that tells you more than you ever wanted to know about a food.  Well, anyway, I did some research and it seems that the snack we have all grown to know and love originated at the old Arlington Stadium back in 1977.  Nachos were around (a chip with cheese and a pepper on it) but weren’t so easy to sell in a concession stand.

That is until a gentleman by the name of Frank Liberto developed the gelatinous substance we now call “Nacho Cheese”.  He reformulated the cheese to be soft all the time and simply poured it over the tortilla chips. He began to sell his new version of nachos in 1977 at Arlington Stadium, then home to the Texas Rangers.   Nachos really took off when “Monday Night Football” came to the area later that year. Before the game, Liberto made sure the product was available to the broadcasters in the reception area.  Howard Cosell took a liking to the snack, but moreso to the name. That night and for weeks after, Cosell and the rest of the “Monday Night Football” team worked the word “nacho” in wherever they could!  And the rest, as they say, is history.

Arlington, home of the ballpark nasty nacho? Who knew?

You can enjoy some of those nachos when the Rangers take on the Angels tonight at the Ballpark if you so desire.  Gametime is 7:35 pm.  Fireworks will follow the game.

Happy Independence Day Everyone!

Thanks to Jennifer and Sabatos.net for this bit of trivia.
