There are plenty of Fall-related events around town this weekend. Many churches are having their fall carnivals and the haunted houses are in full-swing. You can have your picture made in the Pumpkin Patch or attend the Texas Guitar Show. And, as always, there is lots of great music to choose from. Retail Center Planned Next to Red Kane Park

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

I’m not sure how I feel about having a retail center right up next to the park, but that’s apparently the plan.

A small retail center with an upscale restaurant is planned near F.J. “Red” Kane Park in south Arlington.

The restaurant will abut the park, which is west of Cooper Street north of Eden Road.

The Tale of Screaming Bridge

Friday, July 13th, 2007

If you’ve lived in Arlington very long, chances are you’ve heard the story of Screaming Bridge.  Many a high schooler has ventured out to North Arlington at midnight to try to hear the screams of the girls who lost their lives in a tragic accident at the bridge.  There are many different versions of the story. Over the last 46 years the details of the accident and even the location of the bridge have changed (most accounts wrongly put it in River Legacy Park). It has evolved into the tall tales we hear today. But this urban legend is born out of a real tragedy. The real story goes something like this: (more…)

Notable News for Monday, July 9

Monday, July 9th, 2007

A man dressed as a woman (and not a very pretty one) robbed the Washington Mutual Bank on South Bowen Road last Thursday.  Police are offering a reward for information leading to his capture.

In the interest of public safety and park preservation, the Parks & Recreation Department has issued some new park rules.  Some of the changes include closing parks at 10pm instead of midnight, keeping dogs on shorter leashes, limiting areas where skateboarding and roller blading are allowed, and prohibiting the use of metal detectors in the parks without written permission (to discourage Geocaching).

This is a great story.  An Arlington man won the lotto while serving in Iraq.  Sgt. Bethurel Griffin was serving in Iraq when he received an email with two words, “You Won!”  Before Griffin left for Iraq, he went ahead and pre-paid the monthly lottery pool at his AT&T job.  While he was gone, his group hit the $12 million jackpot.

The Austin-American Statesman published a nice article about some of the things to do around town.  Writer Helen Anders hit all of the usual tourist attractions and a few lesser-known spots as well.  You can read her review of Arlington here.

Arches finally start to go up on the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

Parks Board approves a new bond package which includes a new skate park, but leaves out much needed renovations to Hugh Smith Recreation Center.

12 year old Leukemia survivor, Kaitlyn Wade, faces a new struggle after a car accident caused by a suspected drunk driver.

Meet the Grand Marshal of tomorrow’s parade, William Kilpatrick III, an Iwo Jima veteran.
