We Have a Winner (or Three)!

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

l_ac6193e0bfab4f74747f11ebecb3581a.jpgWell, since we had the overwhelming response of three commentors in the Maren Morris CD contest, I’ve decided to give each of my commenters one of Maren’s CDs. I’ve notified everyone by email and I’m awaiting their response, but I’ll go ahead and congratulate Kyla, Sarah and Jummy. Thanks for taking the time to comment and congratulations on your win!

I hope you’ll all enjoy your prize. If you’ve taken the time to check out some of the songs on Maren’s MySpace page, you know you won’t be disappointed. Be sure to stop by her page and let her know what you think of the CD. I’m sure she’d love to hear your feedback.

Thanks again to Maren for donating the CDs! I’ve still got some more CDs to give away, so be on the lookout for another contest soon!

It’s Time for a Contest! | Enter to Win Maren Morris’ Latest CD

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

l_ac6193e0bfab4f74747f11ebecb3581a.jpgA few months ago, I had the opportunity to interview Maren Morris, a 17 year old singer/songwriter from Arlington. She told us a little bit about how she got started in the music business, who her influences were and what it’s like to be a young person with a music career. This girl has a promising career ahead of her! If you missed that interview, be sure to check it out here. You can also view a clip of Maren performing live.

Since we talked to her, Maren has been busy doing radio shows to promote her album, All That it Takes, which is currently number 10 on the Texas music charts. She’s also performing all over Texas and Oklahoma. This Saturday, December 15, she’ll be at the Granada Theater in Dallas with Marcia Ball. If you can’t catch her then, check out her MySpace page for her full calendar.

Even though she’s been busy with all of her promotions and performances, Maren took the time to offer a few copies of her CD for us to give away to our readers, so we’re going to have a real simple contest to start things off. All I need you to do is leave a comment on the blog. How easy is that? Just comment on any post between now and Friday, December 14 and you’ll be entered to win. Make sure you use a legitimate e-mail address (only I will be able to see it) because that’s how I will contact the winners.

Good Luck!

You Tube Thursday: Shopping for Cowboy Hats

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

Have you heard of the band New Year’s Day? No, well I hadn’t either, but they have a pretty good song called, “I Was Right.” If you want to check out some of their music, go to their MySpace page. The band is currently touring with The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, who I happen to love. I don’t see any Dallas/Fort Worth dates on their calendar yet though.

So what does this have to do with buying cowboy hats? Well, as far as I can tell, Dan and Brad are part of the band’s Street Team and they have embarked on a radio tour to promote the band. They are recording their adventures as they travel across the U.S. by car. They have posted some amusing You Tube videos of their exploits, one of which shows them at Cavender’s Boot City in Arlington shopping for cowboy hats.

For more adventures of Dan and Brad, check their website: http://www.newyearsdayrocks.com/iwasrightradiotour/

Symphony Arlington Opens 8th Season Tomorrow

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

782041_violin_in_detail_2.jpgSymphony Arlington begins its eighth season Thursday night with a special concert featuring the award winning pop group, the 5th Dimension. Their songs include “Age of Aquarius” and “Last Night I Didn’t Get to Sleep.”

Five is a magic number with the Symphony this year, whose season is entitled “High Five.” They will be exploring the 5th Symphonies of Haydn, Dvorak, Mahler, Shostakovich and, of course, the most famous of all 5ths, Beethoven.

The concert begins at 8:00 p.m. and will feature a Symphony performance of Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 5 in G Minor and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67. The 5th Dimension will perform following the Symphony selections.

Additional performances this season include:

Celeste Golden - Thursday, November 15 at 8:00 p.m.
Holiday Celebration - Thursday, December 20 at 8:00 p.m.
Jan Jiracek - Thursday, January 17 at 8:00 p.m.
Broadway and 55th - Thursday, February 14 at 8:00 p.m.
Five Play - Thursday, March 13 at 8:00 p.m.
Mahler Symphony #5 - Thursday, April 17 at 8:00 p.m.
Daniel Del Pino - Thursday, May 8 at 8:00 p.m.

Tickets for Thursday’s show rage in price from $25 to $55. Season tickets are available with several different plans to choose from. Performances take place at the MetroCenter, 1323 W. Pioneer Parkway.

Ticket sales generate about 37% of the Symphony’s operating costs. Charitable donations make up the balance needed. Donations are tax-deductible and contributions of $100 or more are recognized in the concert program.

Call 817-385-0484 or visit www.symphonyarlington.org for more information or to purchase tickets.

‘Game Plan’ Cutie Hails from Arlington

Monday, October 1st, 2007

14859008451press101200781714AM.jpgThe Game Plan is the #1 movie in the country right now. It stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Joe Kingman, a superstar quarterback whose team is in the running for the championship. He is living the dream bachelor life…that is until Peyton, the 7 year old daughter he didn’t know he had, shows up at his door. Now he has to fit ballet classes and other girly stuff into his life. Of course predictable hilarity ensues and Joe learns that there is more to life than money, parties and fame.

It just so happens that the adorable little girl who plays Peyton in the movie is a native of Arlington. (more…)

You Tube Thursday: Lou Diamond Phillips Sings with Velvet Love Box

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

I found this interesting video of actor Lou Diamond Phillips singing vocals with local band Velvet Love Box at The Flying Saucer in Fort Worth.

Lou is a graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington and got his start acting in the Fort Worth area. His big break was starring as Ritchie Valens in 1987’s La Bamba. Most recently he has guest starred on Law and Order: SVU, Numb3rs and Psych.

Velvet Love Box has been rocking the Metroplex for over 10 years and was voted Cover Band of the Year three times by Fort Worth Weekly. They play regularly at Bronco’s Sports Bar in Hurst and have been the house band for the Dallas Stars since 2000. Find out when and where you can hear them play by visiting their MySpace page.
