Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

Arlington is home to some great charitable organizations and two of them have some back-to-school events going on this month.  I encourage you to support them in any way you can.

Arlington Charities is collecting donations for its annual Supply Train, which provides about 1,100 families with school supplies. They are accepting donations of supplies and/or money for the cause. School supplies are needed by August 17. Here is a list of what they are looking for: (more…)

Free Rangers Tickets

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

750029_ready_for_action_1.jpgThe Rangers need to fill seats and the school districts need to get students registered so they are teaming up to encourage both. Participating districts include Arlington, Dallas and Garland.

The Rangers will provide free tickets for students and their families to the Aug. 23 game against the Seattle Mariners if they enroll early through a designated testing and orientation center.

Students in Arlington may enroll and receive their tickets at the Language Placement Center located behind Workman Junior High School, 701 E. Arbrook Blvd., from 8 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. beginning Aug. 6. The school’s phone number is 682-867-7430.

Notable News for Friday, July 27

Friday, July 27th, 2007

Officials from both Baylor and Notre Dame confirmed yesterday that their long-discussed game will be played at the new Dallas Cowboys stadium in Arlington on Oct. 6, 2012. They had also been in talks with the Cotton Bowl. It’s a one-year contract and the Fighting Irish will be the home team.

An Arlington man was arrested in Cleburne for assaulting a man who was trying to feed some starving horses. Chad Michael Greenslade followed the man back to his place of business and assaulted him. The horses belong to a relative of Greenslade’s who had been arrested and charged with animal cruelty after authorities found 2 dead and 3 starving horses on his property.

Kimberly Al-Homsi, who earlier this month was involved in a standoff with police, was arrested again yesterday on another charge of possession of a prohibited weapon. Her bail was set at $100,000.

Saturday, July 14th, 2007

The eastbound entrance ramp on I-30 at Collins Street closes today.  It will remain closed for an estimated 2 years while construction is completed on 3 new bridges.  The Collins Street bridge will be replaced and 2 new bridges, at Baird Farm Rd. and Center St., will be erected.  All work should be completed before the opening of the Cowboys Stadium in 2009.

Notable News for Wednesday, July 11

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

The Arlington ISD and businesses like the General Motors Assembly Plant are worried about the storm water fee hike the City Council approved last week.   The Council voted to raise residential fees a little over $3.00 per month, but that’s nothing compared to what commercial customers would pay.  The AISD would go from paying about $6,000 per month to over $31,000, an amount that Superintendent Mac Bernd calls “unconscionable.”

Texas Rangers owner Tom Hicks has purchased the Stonegate Pines mobile home park south of the Ballpark.  The site was originally slated to be purchased for the Cowboys stadium project, but the city decided not to purchase it due to escalating costs for the development.  Many residents have moved, but some remain.  Their future is unclear at this point.

Mansfield will join other local communities in putting photos and information on registered sex offenders online but the City Council rejected a proposal to place stricter limits on where they can live.  They decided that the state laws are sufficient and no further restrictions would be necessary.

A man was killed in Grand Prairie yesterday when a Chevy Blazer ran a red light and struck his vehicle at West Main and NW 6th Street.  The Blazer was being pursued by police just prior to the accident, but police had called off the chase due to public safety concerns.  The driver and his passenger were both apprehended.

Looking for Love?

Monday, July 9th, 2007

801380_47406908_1.jpgThis may be old news to some of you, but apparently I’ve been living in a box for the past few months because I just found out that Arlington was named the #3 city in the United States for meeting men over 35.  Oprah even featured the city on her show back in April.

Men’s Health Magazine, in conjunction with The Oprah Winfrey Show, calculated the men-friendliness of different cities based on 7 categories:  ratios of single men to single women and of gay to straight; divorce rates; fitness; philanthropy; education; thrill factor (places with fun stuff that makes hearts race and bonds form).  Here’s what they had to say about our fair city: (more…)

Arlington, home of the Nacho?

Wednesday, July 4th, 2007

nachocheese_1.jpgWell, the ballpark nacho at least.  My friend, Jennifer, self-proclaimed Food Network Addict, enlightened me to this fact.  She had seen it on one of those shows that tells you more than you ever wanted to know about a food.  Well, anyway, I did some research and it seems that the snack we have all grown to know and love originated at the old Arlington Stadium back in 1977.  Nachos were around (a chip with cheese and a pepper on it) but weren’t so easy to sell in a concession stand.   (more…)

Fireworks Abound this Independence Day

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

815054_35366069_1.jpgAs I mentioned yesterday, you can catch fireworks at the Lake tonight during the “Light Up the Lake” celebration.  Tomorrow night they’ll be lighting up the Ballpark in Arlington following the Rangers game against the Angels.  You can go to the game or just park near the stadium and enjoy the show.  We usually grab a spot in the southeast corner of the Six Flags Mall parking lot and have a great view.  The game starts at 7:35 so fireworks will probably begin sometime around 10:00, but you better find a spot to park well before then.  Tickets for the game start at $3 for kids and $6 for adults.

Here is a list of other celebrations in the Metroplex: (more…)
