Notable News for Monday, August 13

A 32 year old Grand Prairie man, upset after an argument with his girlfriend, threatened to commit suicide by jumping off the Pioneer Parkway bridge over highway 360 on Saturday. Traffic was a mess for over 3 hours. Police negotiators finally talked the man down around 10:30pm. Police report that the man has a history of mental illness.

Arlington may join cities like Fort Worth, Grapevine and Hurst by implementing a crime tax district. Most council members, including Mayor Robert Cluck, support creating a crime control district. The crime tax (raising the sales tax from 8% to 8.125%), if approved by voters, would be put in place for five years. Voters could then renew the tax and crime control district for five, 10, 15 or 20 years. The proposal will be discussed further at tomorrow’s City Council meeting.
