Police Standoff Turns into Chase | Man Drives Car Into Lake
A woman and her two children were found dead inside their east Fort Worth home this afternoon, and police were in a standoff for hours with the suspect before he suddenly took off and drove his car through Arlington, down a boat ramp and into Lake Arlington.
The car sank and was completely submerged as of 7:45 p.m., and the man was believed to still be inside. Authorities are at the scene now. According to Fox 4, Police believe the suspect may have shot himself in the head as he went into the water.
Fort Worth police said that a 13-year-old girl, 10-year-old boy and a woman were victims of gunshot wounds. Police found the three when responding to a call in the 2100 block of Mims St. at about 1 p.m. Friday. The woman was the suspect’s wife and the 2 children were hers from a previous marriage. The couple also had a 3 year old daughter.
Police also say that at about 1 p.m., a man suspected in the shootings dropped off the 3-year-old, covered in blood yet unharmed, at Mayfield Road Baptist Church at 1701 E. Mayfield Road in Arlington. As he left the girl, he told church staff that he had just killed some people and was going to kill some more.
Arlington Police spokeswoman Christy Gilfour said the armed man was inside a car in the 3300 block of Carter Drive, talking with police on his cellphone. A robot was sent to the car with a cellphone and the man was given surrender instructions. Television images showed the man’s car backed into a driveway at a house. The house is located only about a half block from Lynn Hale Elementary School on Carter Drive. An armored police truck was on the scene, parked near the man’s car.
At Hale Elementary, teachers moved students to the south end of the school away from Mayfield. Parents of Hale students started arriving at around 2:20 p.m. and could not get to the school. School officials separated students into parent pickup and walkers. The walkers and bus students were required to stay at school until the incident was clear. Riders were released to their parents.
